He participated in many aspects of the Vicksburg civil rights movement, as an attendee at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City when the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challenged the Mississippi Democrats. He also worked with the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), as well as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
