As pastor of St. Paul's Church in Ripley, James was a leader in the integration of the local hospital, schools, and restaurants. He also facilitated NAACP and civil rights movement meetings in Ripley, and he was also present at the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party meeting at Antioch Baptist Church in Blue Mountain the night before it was burned.
