President Jimmy Carter, looking downcast, holds scissors labeled, "Regulatory reform to cut red tape & regulations." The cartoon caption reads, "It's time to liberate us from regulatory entanglemen" [sic].

From the AAEC Editorial Cartoon Collection. Cartoon by Ed Valtman. Edward Kennedy is on hands and knees in the center of a large group of people outside a tent labeled, " '80 camp." He is blowing on a campfire to increase the flames, and a plume of smoke is rising. The people around him look on. Some have signs such as "Teddy; Kennedy; Kennedy for president." From the tent opening, Rose Kennedy says, "Better come in from the cold, son."

Leonid Brezhnev, labeled "Soviet occupation," has wrestled a much smaller man, labeled "Czechoslovakia," to the floor and has tied him up with rope. Czechoslovakia is fighting and kicking, but Brezhnev has him pinned down. Brezhnev looks over his shoulder at Walter Ulbricht, labeled "East Germany," who is looking into the room from the hallway. Brezhnev says, "Looks like I've got him tied up, finally! Now I'm going to make an ally out of him again!"

Both have their hands out trying to detect obstacles. Each also has a foot out in the attempt to walk. Two men labeled "Energy crisis" and "Inflation" crawl on the floor, smiling as they look up at the blindfolded men.

They are labeled "Responsible leaders of Southern communities," and Kennedy is pinning a medal on the chest of one man. Hubert Humphrey looks into the shop window of "Eugene McCarthy--Cabinetmaker" and admires a tall wardrobe cabinet labeled "Specially designed for the White House." He says, "I didn't know he was in that business." McCarthy stands frowning at the shop door with crossed arms; the mat in front of the door reads, "Watch your step."

Half the suit is too short for him and half is too long. President Jimmy Carter stands next to him and speaks to a woman (unidentified) labeled "Senate." He says, "Look, it's not so bad at all if you're not too fussy." Soviet leader Andrei Gromyko is portrayed as a tailor, saying,"The boss says it's absolutely final...no changes!"

Zbigniew Brzezinski and Cyrus Vance, dressed as chefs, turn to see a man dressed as a waiter, labeled "Strauss," carrying a soup tureen labeled "U.S. Middle East resolution" back to the kitchen. Through the open doors to the dining room, Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat can be seen seated at a table. President Jimmy Carter, labeled "Manager," looks on with concern. Strauss says, "They sent it back...I wonder who's in charge here?" [Note: artist's date 1979?]
