Oral history.; Transcript of interview conducted on May 9, 2003 with Dolphus Weary. Reverend Dolphus Weary was born to Albert and Lucille Granderson Weary in Sandy Hook, Mississippi in August 1946. Both of Weary's parents had children from previous marriages, as well as children from their own. In all, Weary has nineteen siblings. His grandfather owned a farm, and at the age of seven Weary began picking cucumbers; at the age of nine he started picking cotton. Weary graduated high school from Piney Woods, as did all of his siblings. He attended Los Angeles Baptist College (now Master's University) on a basketball scholarship where he was one of two African American students. He earned a B.S. degree in biology, and remained to get a master's degree in Christian education. In college, Weary played basketball for the Overseas Crusade Sports Ambassadors, enabling him to travel, play basketball, and evangelize in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. After earning his master's degree, Weary moved back to Mendenhall to begin his ministry work. He married Rosie in February 1970. Together they have three children, two boys and one girl. Weary's ministry work throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s prepared him for leadership as president of Mendenhall Ministries, an umbrella organization for churches throughout the region.
