From the Map Collection. Map of Mississippi from 1850. Published on page 23 of an unnamed publication: Philadelphia : Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Map shows counties, towns, and roads. Includes table of steam boat routes and distances from Natchez to New Orleans and Natchez to Pittsburg. Longitude given in degrees west from Washington. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1850 by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., in the Clerk's office of the District court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania." [Apparently derived from the 1836 map of the same name by H.S. Tanner (see mus.map0494, see page number 23 on each map), but differences are noted on inspection.]

Letter from John Anthony Quitman, governor of Mississippi to the governor of Connecticut, Thomas Hart Seymour (unnamed in the document), dated 10 June 1850. Two copies of the laws passed in the last Mississippi legislative session were being forwarded and Quitman requested an acknowledgement of their arrival.

A letter, dated 7 April 1850, from Mississippi Congressman Winfield Scott Featherston to an unidentified person on the subject of the appointment of a cadet. The addressee had recommended Mr. Brownrigg as had Isham Harrison, but Featherston had appointed a more strongly recommended candidate, Mr. Davis. The letter also contains Featherston's views on slavery.
