Oral history.; Mrs. Leila Lyle Wilkinson Underhill was born in Shelby, Mississippi, on July 29, 1919. She grew up during the Great Depression and remembers the flood of 1927. During World War II, Mrs. Underhill's brother was killed. Mrs. Underhill earned her B.S. from Delta State Teachers College in 1940 and became a teacher. She earned her master's degree at Mississippi State and in 1967 she became a mathematics instructor at Delta State University where she taught until her retirement in 1983. In 1938 and 1939, Mrs. Underhill was vice president of the State Methodist Student Conference, and in 1939 and 1940, she was president. Her major interests are the DAR, DSU Alumni, DSU Golden Fifties, and the Wesley Foundation. She is an avid fan of Delta State University sports; she has not missed Homecoming since she was graduated in 1940.

Oral history.; Reverend Edmund Howell was born on November 14, 1917, in Jackson, Alabama. His father worked at the locks on the Tombigbee River. Reverend Howell spent about three years in the United States military service in the South Pacific. He worked with the Army Engineers on Government Street Loop, Mobile, Alabama, recovering sunken barges. In 1950, Reverend Howell moved to Biloxi, Mississippi. In 1971, he was called to the ministry. He is currently the associate minister and teacher of a men's Sunday school class at Main Street Baptist Church in Biloxi.

Oral history.; On September 13, 1924, Mr. Martin Thomas King, Jr., was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. As a child, Mr. King witnessed the flood of 1927. Mr. King attended public school in Vicksburg. From 1942 to 1946, Mr. King served in the Navy in the Pacific theater of operations. He was in Naval Aviation, attending schools at the University of South Carolina, the University of Georgia, and the University of North Carolina. He fought in the liberation of the Philippines. Following World War II, Mr. King attended Delta State College from which he earned a B.S. Ed. in 1950. He taught school in Cleveland, and earned his master's degree in administration from the University of Mississippi. In 1957, Mr. King left teaching and worked in the real estate and insurance businesses. In 1959, his father-in-law died, and Mr. King and his wife began managing the Thweat-King Funeral Home. In 1988, Mr. King retired from the funeral business. In May of 1969, Mr. King won the mayoral race in Cleveland.
