Oral history.; An interview conducted on May 8, 1996 with Jan Handke. Jan Handke was born in Santa Monica, California in 1945. After graduating high school in 1963 she attended Stanford University. Handke met students involved with Robert Moses and became aware of the struggle for civil rights in Mississippi. In the summer of 1964 Handke was assigned to Vicksburg, Mississippi where she worked on voter registration and in the local Freedom School. She returned to Stanford at the end of the summer after having helped to register 30 African American voters. After graduating from Stanford, Handke earned a master's degree in public health and worked in positions at the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
