Description: Oral history.; Transcript of interview recorded on February 6, 2003. Joseph R. Robert was born in New Orleans and moved to Gulfport in 1933 when he was two years old. He attended Catholic schools, graduating in 1951. Robert served in the Navy Reserve while in high school, and after graduation he went to work for a roofing company in Mobile. His reserve unit was activated in 1952 during the Korean War, and he was assigned to the USS Brent at Yorktown, Virginia. Robert left the Navy in 1954 and returned to Gulfport where he took a civil service job at Keesler Air Force Base, first as a laborer then as a painter in the engineering section. He retired in 1987.
