Oral history.; Born in 1920 in Jayess, Mississippi, Detroit Whitworth grew up helping his parents on their farm. In 1943, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines. After World War II, Mr. Whitworth reenlisted and spent twenty years in the Army. In 1963, Mr. Whitworth retired from the military and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast; he spent twenty years working at the Port of Gulfport as a longshoreman. On October 13, 2003, Mr. Detroit Whitworth died.
