Oral history.; Ulysses S. Williams was born in 1919, in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He is the great-grandson of slaves. Mr. Williams grew up on a farm raising hogs, goats, and a garden. His family cut and sold wood and made and sold charcoal. Mr. Williams graduated from St. Rose de Lima Catholic High School on May 29, 1938; he was one of six graduates that year. While in high school, he played basketball and drove the bus for the basketball team. Mr. Williams served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 in the Pacific. Upon completion of his military duty, he returned home to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to work in the logging industry.
