Oral history.; Donald Evans grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and attended Arkansas A&M College on a football scholarship. He began working as housing director at the William Bell Housing Association in 1969, then as a longshoreman in the Port of Gulfport in 1972. He was elected vice president of the International Longshoremen's Association local in 1980 and president in 1989.
