Description: Oral history.; Interview conducted on July 7, 1993 with Lt. Col. Billie Hughes of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol. Hughes was born in Pearl River County, Mississippi. He grew up in Pike County, Mississippi. After working for the railroad industry, Hughes became a Mississippi highway patrolman in 1964. He served as a trooper during the height of racial tensions in Mississippi during the sixties.
