Annie Lee Stewart was born in Grenada County, Mississippi in 1927 and grew up on the land that her parents sharecropped. Stewart joined the movement for civil rights after civil rights workers visited to encourage voter registration. She worked as a cook at the Monte Christie Cafe when activists were working to integrate it.
